Rejuvenation Therapy

Ayurveda Rejuvenation Therapy

This is an unique therapy in the science of ayurveda. It keeps the body young and agile. Rasayana or rejuvenation therapy helps to promote and preserve health and longevity in the healthy, and to cure disease in the sick. The therapy enhances one's energy and is even known to have cured the sick. It also increases a healthy person's mental and physical capabilities. It is known to have improved skin complexion and texture, modulates the voice and increases sensing capacity of sense organs. Rasayanas or vitalizers, as they are called, do exactly the same. They replenish the vital fluids of our body, thus keeping us away from diseases. Rasayana is actually that which increases the essence of each dhatu, starting with rasa. Taking rasayana is helpful to increase the immunity of the person to keep him away from diseases. The person becomes healthy and strong.

Some of the benefits of rejuvenation therapy are as follows:

Long life.
Increase in memory power.
Good health.
Young looks.
Glowing skin.
Modulated voice.
Calmness.
Resistance to diseases
Optimum strength of the body

Functions Rasayanas deal with the methods to maintain youth, increase longevity, intellectual capacity and strength and keep the patients free from diseases. Effects of Rejuvenation When rejuvenation therapy is complete, the indulgence in activities as ordained by the scriptures, understanding the mind of the persons nearby and mind unwavering by the (effect of) objects (of sense organs), becomes possible.

Effects of Drugs and Alcohol on Male Fertility

Effects of Drugs and Alcohol on Male Fertility

While it has been well documented how the use of drugs and alcohol during pregnancy can affect a developing fetus, the fact that these substances can also harm male fertility is not as well known. When you and your partner are trying to conceive, it is best to cut alcohol and drugs from your life.

AlcoholMen who regularly drink large amounts of alcohol or engage in binge drinking (four or more drinks in one evening) are likely to have serious problems with their fertility. Alcoholics often have problems with achieving and maintaining an erection. Additionally, because alcohol damages the liver, alcoholics are more likely to have higher levels of estrogen in their body, which can severely suppress sperm. Moreover, alcohol abuse has been linked with damaged sperm and reduced sperm counts.

Even if you are not a heavy drinker, you may want to cut back on your drinking habits. Studies have shown that women who drink moderate amounts of alcohol (one to five drinks per week) can have impaired fertility. While the effects of moderate drinking have not been properly studied in men, it is likely that regular alcohol consumption could impair male fertility as well.
NarcoticsRecreational drug use has also been associated with male infertility. Narcotics like heroin, amphetamines, cocaine and PCP have been linked with a decrease in libido, erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory problems. Heroin, as well as other drugs, has been shown to disrupt normal hormone production causing diminished LH and testosterone levels. However, both of these hormones are need in order for the male reproductive system to function properly and for healthy sperm development.

Cocaine in particular has been shown to significantly impact a man's fertility and even contribute to birth defects in a child. Men who use cocaine have been found to have lower sperm counts, reduced sperm motility, as well as an increase the amount of abnormal sperm. Cocaine use just prior to conceiving has also been associated with birth defects in children.

Athletes who use anabolic steroids to help increase their muscle mass are also advised to skip the drugs if they are hoping to have a child. These steroids have been shown to interfere with proper sperm production and to lower a man’s sperm count.

MarijuanaFrequent marijuana use has been linked with a reduction in sperm count and seminal fluid. As well, the sperm behavior of men who regularly smoke marijuana has been found to be "abnormal", meaning that the sperm has problems swimming as well as penetrating the egg. Lower testosterone levels are also common in men who habitually smoke marijuana. As a normal testosterone level is vital to the production of sperm, regular use of marijuan causes this process to become hindered.

If you engage in any of these behaviors, it is recommended that you cut out these vices when you are trying to conceive. However, do not expect to get your partner pregnant as soon as you stop drinking alcohol or smoking marijuana. Because it takes three months for your body to produce sperm, the effects and damage you may have done to your reproductive system can persist long after you have stopped using drugs or alcohol.

Infertility

Important facts about fertility

Infertility is a problem in which a person is not able to concieve a child. The person affected from this problem must not be able to procreate for a period of 1 full year even after trying. There are many reasons for this infertility. It may be natural, unnatural or by birth.

It is a very common problem. According to an estimate about 12 percent of women in the United States are suffering from the problem of infertility. It is also common in males. Men often suffer from low sperm count, which lead them to infertility.

What is Ayurveda and how it can be used against infertility?

Ayurveda is ancient Indian science that can be used to treat many diseases. It is very popular in Asia and it is growing its popularity in last few years. This is amazingly effective in treating many diseases.

The word Ayurveda is made from two words. ‘Ayur’ means life and ‘Veda’ means knowledge. So the word Ayurveda means the knowledge of life. Ayurveda can also be considered as herbal therapy, because in this therapy only herbal products are used to cure any disease. Mostly plants and plant extracts are used to treat disease.

Ayurveda not only provides for the treatment of disease but it also provides for the methods by which a disease can be prevented. This therapy is also proved to be very useful to prevent infertility and increase the chances of getting a child.

The advantages of Ayurveda

The first and the foremost advantage of this therapy is that it does not have any side effects. This treatment is completely safe and natural. The other advantage is that it is very cheap when compared to other therapies to cure the infertility. It is also very easy to implement and reduces the need for any operation or harmful medicine.

So if you feel that you are not able to procreate or are facing any difficulty in performing a sexual intercourse, then you should start taking the herbs of Ayurveda because they do not have any side effects and can be very effective in helping fertility.

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis

What Are Tonsils?

The tonsils are situated at the back of your throat - one on the right and one on the left. These two balls of tissue are part of your body's infection fighting system - to help you prevent from getting sick. Usually, tonsils do their job well. But sometimes bacteria or viruses get into the tonsils. As a result, tonsils become so overwhelmed by bacterial or viral infection that they swell and become inflamed, causing tonsillitis.3

Who gets Tonsillitis?

Person of any sex and age may fall a victim to bacteria infection leading to tonsillitis. But, tonsillitis is most common in children, however, the condition rarely occurs in children younger than two years. A peritonsillar abscess is usually found in young adults but can occur occasionally in children. The patient's history often helps identify the type of tonsillitis (i.e., acute, recurrent, chronic) that is present.

What is Tonsillitis ?

Tonsillitis is nothing but the inflammation of the tonsils. This may due to a bacteria infection, or germ, which in some instances responds to treatment with antibiotics. Signs of strep throat and tonsillitis are often alike. When tonsils have been surgically removed the operated person (especially a child) is more susceptible to infections.

What are the Symptoms of Tonsillitis ?

Tonsillitis is mainly characterized by swelling within the tonsils, which become red and inflamed and may even show a surface coating of white spots.

Some of the main signs and symptoms of tonsillitis are:

  • Pain while swallowing.
  • Sensation of chill and presence of fever.
  • Tonsils are engorged, enlarged and inflamed like Small balls.
  • Enlarged, tender glands (lymph nodes) in the jaw and neck.
  • In Acute state, they also discharge purulent fluid.
  • Tone and rhythm of respiration is affected.
  • Headache.
  • Nasal congestion and runny nose.
  • Severe sore throat.

How is the Infection Spread ?

Whatever the cause may be - whether it is a bacteria or a virus, tonsillitis is generally spread very easily from one person to other through airborne droplets, hand contact or kissing.

What are the Causes of the Tonsillitis ?

The most common cause of tonsillities is bacterial or viral infection. The herpes simplex virus like: Streptococcus pyogenes (GABHS) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus, adenovirus, and the measles virus cause most cases of acute pharyngitis and acute tonsillitis. Bacteria cause 15-30 percent of pharyngotonsillitis cases and GABHS are responsible for most of the bacterial tonsillitis.

Some other causes of Tonsillitis are given below:

  • Repeated throat infections.
  • Excessive use of spices, condiments, acrid, pungent and astringent food items.
  • Constant dry, hawking, dog-like cough.
  • Forcible and constant use of voice - often at a high pitch.
  • Chronic Congestion, blockade of nose, when nose is blocked by viscid and tenacious mucus.
  • Excessive eating of toffees, sweets, tamarind, tartaric acid, chewing gum etc.

PEPTIC ULCERS

PEPTIC ULCERS

In simple terms, ulcer is a lesion on the surface of the skin on a mucous surface caused by superficial loss of tissue accompanied by inflammation. Ulcer occurs in various parts of the digestive systems such as the lower part of the esophagus (food pipe, gullet), the lower part of the stomach and the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). The ulcer in the above areas is collectively referred to as Peptic Ulcer. Ulcer found in the colon, a part of the large intestine is known as Stercoral Ulcers.

To a great extent, peptic ulcer is a life-style induced disease of the modern man. The factors that contribute to the incidents of peptic ulcer worldwide are, among others, anxiety and depression, stress at the workplace and home, irregular food habits, smoking and drinking, consumption of ‘fast foods’ and aerated drinks. An old adage goes like this: ‘ulcers appear in the stomach, but are located in the brain’. In the early eighties, microbiologists suggested that a species bacteria known as ‘ Helicobacter Pylori’ damage the mucous membrane of the fundus (of the stomach), pylorus and duodenum and cause lesions.

Another cause of peptic ulcer is the acid present in the digestive juice of the stomach. Gastric glands, which are of three types, numbering approximately forty million, are found on the mucous membrane (the lining that comes in immediate contact with food) of the stomach. They secrete a strongly acidic gastric juice, which contains digestive enzymes, mucin (mucous secretion) and hydrochloric acid. By volume, the acid makes up for more than 50% of the gastric juice.

It has been observed that the quantity and the acid content of the gastric juice are enhanced in a peptic ulcer patient. The etiology is not very clear. This brings about stomachache, heartburn, tastes of acid in the saliva, excessive salivation, flatulence etc and the patient gets fatigued after a spell of brief physical activities.

Treatment

The treatment is patient specific in Ayurveda; hence the following discussion is only a generalization. There are two basic types of treatmenta. Reduce the volume of gastric juice secreted.b. Neutralize the acid content of the gastric juice.

Ayurveda has identified food materials and the ingredients of recipes of cooked food that aggravate, ameliorate or cure the ulcer condition. Meat, eggs, certain raw vegetables and fruits, hot chilly, tamarind (it has tartaric acid), spices etc in excess, carbonated drinks, beverages, tinned and packed food are likely to aggravate the ulcer condition. Medicated milk (cow’s) ameliorates the condition by neutralizing the gastric acid. Ashes extracted by burning certain marine shells (shells of mollusca – conch like cells) and the bark of plants like Plassu (Buteafrondosa) mixed with ghee (clarified butter) is used as a curative ingredient. The treatment regime of consuming properly medicated cow’s ghee is called Snehapanam.
Snehapanam activates and regulates the neuro hormones (epinephrine and nor epinephrine), strengthens the central nervous system (CNS) and the endocrine systems. The quantity and the quality of the medicines used in Snehapanam vary from patient to patient.
The treatment is started at an auspicious time in the morning. Snehapanam is done in three time frames or Matras namely, ALPA MATRA, MADHYA MATRA and UTTAMA MATRA. A matra or time frame denotes the time taken to digest a specific quantity of the medicine ingested. It takes six hours to digest the medicine in Alpa Matra, 12 hours in Madhyama Matra and 24 hours in Uttama Matra. The criteria for deciding the matra are

a. The physical condition of the patient.
b. Severity of the disease and
c. Ability of the patient to digest the fatty medicine.

Initially a test dose of two fluid ounces (30 ml) of medicine is consumed by the patient. The patient remains prostrate on the bed. The physician monitors the time taken by the patient to digest the medicine. From this test, the matra is decided. When the medicine is fully digested, the patient is given a watery rice gruel known as ‘peya’ to drink. ‘Peya is finely broken rice, cooked in lots of water. Based on the ability to digest the medicine and the nature of the ulcer, the quantity of the medicine may go up to 24 ounce a day.

The patient is not allowed to eat or drink till the medicine is fully digested. In normal cases the patient remains without food for 18 hours or more. The patient is given warm water to drink at the end of the designated matra. When the eructation (belching) has no smell or taste of the medicated ghee, it is presumed that the digestion of the medicine is completed.

Snehapanam does not exceed seven days at a stretch. It can be stopped earlier if in the opinion of the physician, the ulcer is cured. The medicated ghee remains in the stomach for 8 to 10 hours and it stops or reduces gastric secretions considerably. The daily routine prevents hydrochloric acid from coming in contact with the mucous coat of affected area. The damaged mucous lining gets rejuvenated and the ulcer disappears.

In the case of ulcer caused by bacteria, the acid is found to be at an above normal level. This condition is called as Amla Pittam.

During the course of the treatment, the patient consumes very little carbohydrate and no protein but plenty of liquids. He / She draws on previously stored potential energy (glycogen) in liver, muscles etc for all metabolic activities. The lipids play stellar roles in metabolism. The CNS and the endocrine systems are simulated. Cortico steroids inhibit bacterial growth. Neuro secretions from the pituitary show enhanced levels. The immune system of the body is activated and strengthened.

The Medicine

In Snehapanam, the ghee is both a medicine and a carrier of the medicine it holds. The medicines and the ghee act in tandem with each other. The ghee has many lipids containing fatty acids and glycerol. The fatty acids may be saturated or unsaturated. The lipids of the cow’s ghee are a storehouse of phospho lipids, which strengthen the CNS, encourage healthy cell membrane and the myelin sheaths of the nerve fibers. The medicine works in five ways, namely as an
a. Anticholinergicb. Antispasmodicc. Anti H 2 receptord. Antacide. Nerve tonic
All the ingredients of the medicine are lipid soluble (fat soluble). They penetrate deep into the mucous coat, incapacitate and kill the ulcer causing bacteria and encourage vigorous tissue growth on the effected intestinal lining.

Conclusion

As in all diseases, in peptic ulcer also, prevention is much more desirable than curative management. A change in life style is the best bet. On the curative aspect, Snehapanam is the most effective treatment to fight peptic ulcer.

Old Age

Changes with age: Old Age

The elderly -- a fast-growing population (estimate: by 2050 >60 million Americans will be over age 65, and 1 million will be over 100).

Effects of aging:

Energy needs decline.

67% due to decreased physical activity

33% due to decreased BMR (loss of muscle mass due to inactivity) This can lead to insufficient essential nutrient content in meals that are calorically adequate.

Vitamin, mineral absorption may change, leading to changing dietary requirements.

Fat distribution patterns change, so skinfold thickness becomes a less accurate measure of total body fat.

In the young fat is mostly subcutaneous.

In the elderly it is mostly intra-abdominal and intramuscular.

Special nutritional problems are associated with aging.

Sensory change: loss of smell, taste may make foods less appealing.

Physical limitations can affect nutrition by affecting ease of obtaining and preparing foods.

Loss of vision (macular degeneration, cataracts).

Arthritis -- loss of mobility.

Impaired mental function (Alzheimer's disease).

Periodontal disease -- chewing may become difficult.

Achlorhydria -- decreased HCl in the stomach may affect protein digestion, calcium absorption, vitamin B12 absorption.

Social factors:

Social isolation, loneliness, depression may result in inadequate diet.

Transportation, financial problems can limit food choices.

Drugs may interact with foods favorably or unfavorably.

This is true for all ages.

But the elderly typically take more drugs, so are more at risk.

Care of Eyes

Care of Eyes

Although we use our eyes everyday, we rarely pay attention to them until there is some serious problem. You can maintain perfect eyesight for most of your life by following some simple remedies. An Important Aspect of HealthIf you were asked, "Do you take care of your eyes once a week or at least once a month?", the most common reply would probably be in the negative. The eyes are considered to tbe the most important organ in ourt body and yet, people neglect to care for them.Although we use our eyes everyday, we rarely pay attention until there is some serious problem. Ayurveda advises to take care of health while in a healthy state. You can maintain perfect eyesight for most part of your life by following some simple remedies.
Every morning after waking up, fill your mouth with water, close the eyes and sprinkle water on them about 10-15 times. Be sure, as Ayurveda advises, to wake up before sunrise. Do not use hot water to wash the eyes.

Wash the eyes or face when the body is sweating, especially after hard physical exercise or after being exposed to heat and sun.

Do not stare continuously, specially while looking at long distance objects. Blinking or giving rest to the eyes is good. Do not look at the objects in bright sunlight for a long time. Avoid reading, writing or working with eyes in improper light, or when the light is not sufficient. Take a break and give rest to the eyes if you feel heaviness or tiredness in the eyes.

Staying up late in the night and sleeping after sunrise is harmful for the eyes. In case of staying up late, drink a cup of water after each hour or half hour.

Protect your eyes from dust, smoke, strong sunlight and strong wind. Avoid staying long in such conditions. In case you have to stay, blink often and massage the closed eyes gently with your palms.

Try to maintain regular and clean bowel movements. Constipation weakens the eyesight. In addition; too much anxiety, mental stress, grief, anger and worry are harmful for the eyes.
Regular eye exercise maintains perfect eyesight. One simple method of exercise is moving the eyeball - right and left; upwards and downwards and rotating it in the clockwise and anti-clockwise directions.

Another simple way of protecting of eyes is through 'palming'. Rub the palms of both hands for about 30 seconds, close the eyes and gently place the warm palms over the eyes.
Eating cabbage and carrots is very beneficial for the eyes. These should be eaten raw. It is all right to drink cabbage and carrot juice mixed together or separately.

If Triphala (an Ayurvedic preparation) is available, you can wash the eyes with 'Triphala water'. Put a teaspoonful of Triphala powder in a glass of water, and let it stay overnight. Strain the water and wash the eyes with it.

Putting one drop of honey in each eye once a week is also beneficial to the eyes. It causes a bit of irritation, but cleans the eyes. Try these remedies and keep your eyes healthy and beautiful. These remedies can be used by everyone, including those having weak eyesight. Through these methods, one can even improve one's weak eyesight and maybe even give up the use of spectacles forever.
