Single drugs treatment for Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a common endocrinal disorder
around the world. Its incidence is increasing day by day and its name became a
common on the tongue of society. It affects the body physiology as well as
psychology. Modern medical science treats hypothyroidism by the hormone pills
to make normal level of hormones in blood. But along with this therapy the
patients may suffer from many symptoms like puffiness of face, edema, body ache,
weight gain, anorexia etc and also with psychological symptoms like depressed mood,
forgetfulness, lethargy etc.
In Ayurveda, hypothyroidism
is not as such mentioned but on basis of its clinical presentation we can
co-relate it with Kaphaja Galganda for local symptom related with thyroid gland
and Kaphaja - Rasaja Vikara for its general symptoms.Acharyas of ayurveda - Sushruta and Vagbhata, both
have prescribed cleaning the body with emesis in the treatment of Hypothyroidism.
Kapha Dosha plays a major role in the pathogenesis of Hypothyroidism. Due to
its slow onset, hypothyroidism became a chronic disease where Dosha vitiated at
its maximum level. For the vitiated Dosha and chronic part of the disease,
Ayurveda always suggests, body cleaning therapy. Due to dominancy of Kapha
Dosha and emesis is the best suit, so amongst cleaning treatments , it may be
effective for the patients of hypothyroidism.
For the internal
medications - Bhallataka tablets and Galgandhara tablets were used. Bhallataka tablet
contains Bhallataka, Haritaki, Guda and Tila. Bhallataka is considered as reduce
fluid content, increase digestive power, reduced coldness, stimulates heart increase
sexual power, increase digestive power. All these qualities of Bhallataka may
be beneficial for the treatment of the symptoms of Hypothyroidism. Bhallataka
is especially against Kapha Dosha, which plays a major role in pathogenesis of
hypothyroidism. The last three drugs are selected for avoiding the side effects
of Bhallataka. Galgandhara tablet is
formulated on the basis of Bhaisajya Ratnavali where Kanchnara guggulu tablet has been specifically prescribed for
Galganda treatment.
