Vamana/Emesis
Vamana is the best treatment according to all the acharyas of Ayurveda to reduce the diseases due to vitiated Kapha Dosha
     Before Vamana Karma patients were specially examined by E.C.G. and other systemic examination for suitability of Vamana Karma.
PREPARATION OF PATIENT:
            The patients ready to undergo emesis process at the out set were prepared with Snehana(oilation) and Svedana (fomentation).
Internal oilation:
            For oilation about 30 gms of Ghee was given at about 7.00 am. On the basis of this test dose, Ghee was gradually increased by about 30 to 50 gms per day. After administering ghee, instructions were given to the patient not to take any type of food, until he feels hunger and only hot water was allowed to drink. When patients were feeling hunger, light diet was prescribed mainly kanji of rice along with some vegetables or dal at the day time. In the evening mainly no spicy curry was prescribed.
Massage and fomentation:
            After ascertaining Samyaka Snehana, patients were subjected to oil massage and steam bath. On the morning (at about 10 am) and in the evening (at about 4.30 pm) of the gap day i.e. the day after the day of completion of internal oilation . Oil massage to the whole body was done for about 20 minutes in all the positions. For this purpose warm Bala Taila was used. Thereafter, steam bath was given to the whole body of the patient when profuse perspiration was observed (generally within 20 to 30 minutes), patient was advised to sit on the chair for about 15 minutes. There after instruction were given to go to the bed covered with blanket and not to move in open area.
DIET ON THE EVENING OF Resting days:
            On the evening of gap day, special soup made of about 50 gms each of rice and green gram, 25 gm of each oil and Ghee was given along with 250 gms of curd. The salt was added as per requirement.
Main procedure:
            On the morning of emesis day at about 6.30 am patient was taken to treatmen room where he was again subjected to oil massage and steam bath in the similar way as mentioned earlier.
            After profuse sweting patient was shifted to chair where he was given milk up to full stomach. After 5 minutes, the mixture of Madanphala Pippali Churna, Vacha Churna, Madhu and Saindhava mixed in the quantity of 6 g, 3 g, 10 g and 1.5 g respectively was diluted in 200 ml Yastimadhu decoction was given orally.
            If the act of emesis started within 10 minutes, no helping drugs were given. If not observed within 10 minutes, Yastimadhu decoction was given, even them if emesis was not occurring then patient was instructed to touch his pharynx with this nail cut clean fingers. Helping drug Yastimadhu decoction was also given in between the acts to enhance vomiting. During the act the patient was helped by pressing the abdomen with palms. In between of two acts , the back of the patient was gently massaged in upwards direction. When pitta in vomits out was seen, hot water was given for gargling. During this procedure after each act, pulse and blood pressure was noted.
            After completion of emesis, patient was transferred to the bed where again pulse, blood pressure and respiration were noted. In the room fuming was done and patient was kept in keen observation for whole day.
